[Seminar Title:] Assisted Dying and Death Stigma: learning from experiences in Colombia, death stigma and accompanying the dying as a doula.
Presenters:
Dr Eduardo Diaz Amado, Director of the Institute of Bioethics at the School of Philosophy, Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá, Colombia.
Dr. Vassiliki Kampourelli, Museum of Medicine, University of Crete. Stigma of Death
Dr Carlos Moreno Leguizamon, AMHH Council.
Chair Dr. Jennifer Patterson
In 1997, the Colombian Constitutional Court decriminalized mercy killing through the landmark case C-239. This pivotal decision highlighted Colombia’s significant role in the global conversation about dying with dignity and euthanasia. Dr Diaz Amado will outline the key milestones in the history of dying with dignity and euthanasia in Colombia by exploring how this history has shaped citizenship (political impact), transformed the collective understanding of death (cultural impact), and challenged the fields of medical ethics, law, and bioethics (normative impact). HIs presentation is followed by Dr Kampourelli who looks to Ancient and more recent literature to inform the physician’s death awareness and that of the medical students she teaches at the University of Crete. Dr Carlos Moreno Leguizamon of the AMHH council has recently trained as a death doula and has agreed to share his experiences. This promises to be a rich evening offering different points of view and space to ask questions and debate with our presenters.
We look forward to seeing you there!
Jennifer on behalf of the AMHH (formerly AMH) council.
