Our March Seminar will be hosted by Ciara Breathnach and Triona Waters who promise a lively discussion on the subject of  Locating Irish women in medical and institutional records.

Join us in celebrating Women’s History Month with an enlightening seminar organized by the Association for Medical Humanities and Healthcare (AMHH). Esteemed presenters Prof. Ciara Breathnach and Dr. Tríona Waters will deliver an intriguing exploration into the historical experiences of Irish women in medical institutions. Drawing from a wealth of archival case files, this event promises to deliver eye-opening insights into the often untold narratives of Irish women’s experiences in healthcare. This event embraces diversity and inclusiveness, and thus, all are whole-heartedly welcome to attend. Join us as we delve into the past to spark conversations and inspire future transformative change in healthcare.

 

Ciara Breathnach is an expert in Irish socio-economic and health history and has published widely. Her recent monograph Ordinary Lives, Death and Social Class: Dublin City Coroner’s Court, 1876-1902 (Oxford University Press, 2022)won the American Conference of Irish Studies, James S. Donnelly Sr. Prize for Books on History and Social Sciences in 2023.

 

Dr. Triona Waters, BA, MA, PhD is a historian of psychiatric medicine and institutions. Currently based in Switzerland, managing the Brain programme at Frontiers’ academic publishing. Previously Postdoctoral Researcher at The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, NUIG. Awarded Royal College of Physicians’ Medical History Research Award, 2018. Research interests are mental health histories adopting oral history methodologies. The most recent project concerned investigating Ireland’s Mother and Baby institutions in response to the 2021 publication of the Final Report. Sitting member on the Association for Medical Humanities and Healthcare, Irish Committee of Historical Sciences and Irish History Students’ Association.
